This 36th volume of JMIS is opened by the Special Section on Engineering Artifacts and Processes of Information Systems. The Section brings together the works focusing on Enterprise Architecture Management, Bitcoin blockchain, and Collaboration Engineering, three aspects of IS design undergirding the contemporary delivery of information services. The Guest Editors, Justin Scott Giboney, Robert O. Briggs, and Jay F. Nunamaker, introduce the significance of each of the papers to you.
In the first paper of the general section, Likoebe M. Maruping, Viswanath Venkatesh, James Y.L. Thong, and Xiaojun Zhang introduce and test empirically a risk-mitigation framework for IS projects worked on by teams with diverse predominant cultural values, thus foregrounding the role of these values in risk management. Integrating several theoretical perspectives, the authors develop a people-process-technological aspects framework that allows them to offer practical suggestions to software-development managers. Notably, the paper opens an avenue to a further granular study of cultural impacts on the multiple facets of risk management in the team-based software production.
Two subsequent papers show the effectiveness of the IS research in the context of ameliorating serious societal and personal afflictions. Julia Klier, Mathias Klier, Lea Thiel, and Ritu Agarwal address the pressing issue of youth unemployment with their study of the mobile peer-group counseling approach. Implemented on a well-known messaging platform, the peer-group support system has been found by the researchers to be a highly meaningful complement to the traditional career-counseling sessions. The study shows how the peer-group support app was grounded in the theoretical premises and how the randomized field experiment allowed the researchers to draw the conclusions regarding its effectiveness. Along with the authors, we may note that this lightweight peer support approach may be extended to many other environments.
The next paper in the issue highlights the effectiveness of a related approach in a more fraught context. Online health communities, or communities of affliction, have become a highly important means of social support, morale boosting, and—vitally—the means of exchanging the information among the participants on the ways of addressing their condition. The totality of the experiential knowledge exchanged surpasses in many cases that possessed by the individual physicians and serves, under the ethical precautions, the pharma companies. Here, Langtao Chen, Aaron Baird, and Detmar Straub study with econometric methods the aspects of the effectiveness of discussion boards focused on several chronic diseases. Their findings include the conclusion that helping others has a stronger effect on the attitude of the participants than being helped themselves. Co-creation of value indeed.
In the next paper, Randall K. Minas and Alan R. Dennis show how the use of creativity support systems (CSS) may be made more effective with priming. Specifically, the authors use visual music as the priming stimulus concurrent to the task. The videos were unrelated to the tasks, yet focusing on victory and achievement. The tasks consisted in idea generation, and the priming was found significantly effective in broadening the participants’ solution space. The authors provide a careful analysis of the results and show how the currently used CSS, as well as other information systems (IS), may be enhanced with such priming add-ons.
Kevin Craig, Jason Bennett Thatcher, and Varun Grover define and operationalize an important construct that many of us encounter and recognize intuitively. They call the construct the IT identity threat, and find it culpable in the resistance to the adoption and use of information systems. Deploying several disciplinary literature streams on identity and self-esteem, the researchers recognize several personal, social, and work-related threats that may be perceived by an individual and lead to the resistance. The work is important in defining a key construct and testing the model encompassing its nomological network. As the authors point out, this work also offers the first operational measure of an identity threat of any kind and is a reciprocal contribution to the reference disciplines to which we are in debt.
User engagement is the key to success of online knowledge exchange platforms. The engagement has, of course, multiple dimensions, quantity and quality of contributions being the most obvious. The motivation to contribute has been a subject of extensive research, with the intrinsic motivations often found to crowd out the extrinsic ones, such as payment for contribution (asking or answering), via psychological effects. As the next paper in the issue shows, further study and contingency analyses are required. Zhijun Yan, Lini Kuang, Ni Huang, and Yili Hong conduct a study of financial incentives in a quasi-natural experiment on a platform with hybrid dual paid and voluntary services. Among the nuanced results is the finding that, beyond the salutary effects on knowledge contribution, the financial incentives spill over to affect positively the non-incentivized user behaviors. It follows that the role of financial incentives in value co-creation by users requires further investigation.
Global virtual teams develop much of the software we use. Leading these teams has always been a challenge, if only owing to their non-colocation, cultural dispersion, and frequent round-then-clock operation. Leadership is frequently shared among several team members, the sharing assumed generally to have a good effect. However, as the concluding paper of the issue shows, this is not always the case. The authors, Emma Nordbäck and J. Alberto Espinosa, classify the contingencies of shared leadership. They go on to present the results of their qualitative investigation of the effectiveness of the coordination mechanisms under shared leadership, and are able to offer practical contingency-based guidelines.
