The Special Section that opens this twenty-seventh volume of the Journal is devoted to the social aspects of information systems and of the larger systems they serve. Although the social aspects cannot be neatly isolated from the technological ones for the purpose of a study in a natural setting (the systems principle in action), social factors define the success and failure in the settings analyzed here. Ideation, complex decision making, collaboration models, around-the-clock software development, development of information-based strategy, technology-supported teamwork, intraorganizational blogging, and software licensing are the phenomena under study in this issue’s papers. They are highly salient to the present and future deployment of organizational information systems. The Guest Editors, Robert O. Briggs, Jay F. Nunamaker Jr., and Ralph H. Sprague, introduce the papers.
The first paper in the general section, authored by Daniel Q. Chen, David S. Preston, and Weidong Xia, reports an empirical study of the changing role of the chief information officer (CIO). With information technology (IT) becoming commoditized at the infrastructural levels of the stack, and with outsourcing, cloud computing, and service-oriented architectures moving much of the provision to specialist firms, albeit at the same time as IT is becoming a weighty determinant of corporate capabilities, the CIO is expected to act as a partner in strategy forming to other C‑level executives. The researchers offer and validate a staged maturity model of the CIO transition from the supply-side, operationally oriented leadership role to the demand-side role, with the responsibilities for the strategic deployment of organizational IT. The model will serve future researchers of the new CIO roles. Organizations will be able to employ the transition factors identified in this work in their assessment of CIO role fulfillment.
The concluding paper in the issue, by Ryan T. Wright and Kent Marett, investigates an all-too-familiar side of computing: phishing. The staggering figure cited by the authors as resulting from phishing damages just in the United States motivates the authors to investigate the factors that condition the susceptibility of the deceived. The authors offer suggestions, based on their validated model, for the designers of antiphishing and other software mediating users’ access to the messages and for user education aimed at modifying their behavior.
